Cruesli.. Granola.. rawnola.. Whatever the difference is; this breakfast trend has flown over from the United States to Europe. AND IT SMELLS SO GOOD!
Some people tend to skip breakfast, saying it takes too much time and effort to make. But how quick and easy is it to take a bowl and put in some (dairy free) milk or yogurt and granola?
Although it requires some preparation time once a week, eating homemade granola makes it even better, because you can adjust it to your own taste, and I think the experience of eating homemade goods is so much better!
Besides, and most importantly, there is nothing like the smell of freshly baked granola in your home.
INGREDIENTS (for about 2-4 portions)
■150 gr oats
■30gr maple/rice/date syrup
■8 gr vanilla sugar
■ 80 ml water
◇ 15 gr almonds (cut in halves)
◇15 gr walnuts (cut in halves)
● 50 gr raisins
● 10 gr flaked coconut
1. Heat the oven to 160°C.
2. Mix all the ■-ingredients well in a large mixing bowl. Add some water to make it a dough and spread it out as dough chunks over a baking sheet. Some ovens, like mine, don't bake equally. So I turned the granola over halfway through baking (after 20 minutes).
3. After 30 minutes add the ◇ almonds and walnuts, and bake for another 10 minutes. Altogether the granola needs 40 minutes of baking, until light brown and crunchy.
4. Is your granola crunchy enough? If not, turn off the oven but let the plate stay there for some minutes.
5. Last but not least, add the ● raisins and shredded coconut and/or other yummy ingredients.
AND NOW: try not to eat it all in once (as I always tend to do) unless you loved the progress of baking and really like to make granola all over again ;)
TIP 1: Check the granola every now and then. In this very rare occasion size does matter ;) because the little chunks get brown faster than the bigger chunks. So be cautious!
TIP 2: Try other supplements like chocolate, dried fruit, nuts and seeds.. be creative!
Ps. For me having breakfast is very important. If I skip breakfast, I feel tired, restless and unsatisfied all day, whereby I feel the need to drink coffee and eat all day long.
If your body asks for it, it is recommendable to eat breakfast within an hour after waking up to boost your metabolism and fuel your body for all the life processes and movements you will make that coming day.
